 Module Title
DESIGN PRACTICE

END OF MODULE SELF-EVALUATION

NAME
Alex Dyson

1.  What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have definitely learned the importance of design sheets, I never did them that often and just went with my first ideas but I have learned to develop my ideas further and appreciate feedback more. I got a lot out of this brief as both a self reflection of what I have gotten out of the year in general with the Speaking from Experience brief. I was very ill during the secret 7 brief so I still hate what I did for it and wish I was better and did more. Other than that, I have learned how to print effectively with indesign and had a good chance at practice when most people on the course had no idea and asked me to show them.

2. What approaches to/methods of design production have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

As well as how to use and develop layout sheets and thumbnail designs I have also learned book binding, even though I didn’t use these processes as they weren’t suitable for my aesthetics. I have experimented with more stocks and also a very modernist working style I haven’t used before which I enjoyed doing.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalise on these?

I think the strongest piece of work I have in this module is the speaking from experience brief. I put the most time and effort into it and it’s one of my favourite pieces of work to date. After learning more about colour in design principles I was able to manage it a lot more and produce a very clean aesthetic, which I really liked when finished. Other than that, my layout design has improved drastically and I will continue to experiment with grids and layouts.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these in the future?

The secret 7 brief is a very weak body of work in my opinion even though this is due to me being very ill over the course of that week. I think being healthier in terms of eating and exercise might be an improvement of immune system to stop me getting that ill again. Other than that, even though I have gone further with them than I have before, my design sheets only started properly developing in the speaking from experience brief. These are certainly going to be a very vital part of my development in future.

5. Identify things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

I would definitely do a lot more planning and thumbnails to back up my design process, I think my body of work would be a lot stronger if I made the time to plan out my ideas and experiment with others. Apart from that I would say trying different book binding would be a good idea, as even though I reflected my work on the feedback I received, I still need to try different forms of binding for future projects.

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

The evaluation of your work is an important part of the assessment criteria and represents a percentage of the overall grade. It is essential that you give yourself enough time to complete your written evaluation fully and with appropriate depth and level of self-reflection. If you have any questions relating to the self evaluation process speak to a member of staff as soon as possible.
